Why Do You Need Yoga Teacher Training?

I have written previously that you do not need any certification to teach yoga. However, the RYT programs such as the RYT 200 by the yoga alliance do carry significant weight in the industry.

If you plan to teach yoga in a studio or a retreat center you will most likely need to have an RYT 200 yoga certification at the minimum. Most studios and retreat centers will not hire you without the RYT certification in place. 

Attending yoga teacher training and getting certified gives you credibility. Additionally, apart from providing you with a sound foundation in yoga also teaches you to “teach” and impart knowledge, a skill that not everyone possesses naturally.

The teacher training offered by YogaWorks has more options than any other and is one of the most popular programs in the entire world. Whether you are looking for a weekend option or a full retreat, there are several great choices here. 

It can be especially useful to have a certification with YogaWorks because of how well-known and reputable the program is. Many graduates from this training report that they were able to move straight into a teaching career right away.

2. YogaRenew 200-Hour Online Teacher Training

The completely online YogaRenew program is easily the most cost-efficient, coming in at under $500. While some might miss the experience of connecting with other students and teachers, I love that this program makes excellent teacher training much more accessible.

3. My Vinyasa Practice Online 500-Hour Teacher Training Bundle

The online program at My Vinyasa Practice is unique in that it is a 500-hour course, resulting in a much deeper learning experience than 200-hour ones. This bundled training will not only leave you with the ability to teach other students but start learning how to teach other teachers! For anyone wanting to teach, this online course will make you ready for anything. 

4. Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health 200-Hour Teacher Training

The Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health has been around for about 40 years, teaching new students the practice of yoga. The campus you would be studying on is beautiful and includes bonus features such as saunas and hiking trails! 

5. Miami Life Center 200-Hour Ashtanga Teacher Training

If you practice yoga in the style of Ashtanga, then the Miami Life Center is the place for you. The alumni rave about their experiences and the high standards in place. While the price is high, the positive experience is definitely worth the price tag for some. 

6. Eb & Flow Yoga Studio 200-Hour Teacher Training

While this is a smaller studio than some of the others on this list, don’t let that cause you to skim over. Eb & flow Yoga Studio is Black-owned and owned by a mother and daughter duo. They offer scholarships for BIPOC communities in an effort to make the yoga community more inclusive. 

Both have studied extensively with some of the yoga “greats” and offer one of the transformative teacher training programs I have ever come across. This is a must for anyone wanting more intimate, yet intense yoga teacher training. 

7. Baptiste Power Yoga Instructor Credential

This one comes with a small caveat — this is not a 200-Hour program that will result in teacher certification. This is a program made by Baptiste himself, that earns a credential for Baptiste Power Yoga. 

While not an accredited program, Baron Baptiste is considered one of the greats and his course is very valuable. This program is great for anyone desiring to learn the practice at a deeper level or those who have already completed a YTT and wish to broaden their abilities. 

8. Iyengar Yoga Source Three Year Teacher Training

This Three Year Yoga program is the longest training on the list and the only one that is exclusively training students in the Iyengar style of yoga. Iyengar is a style that heavily uses props and emphasizes proper alignment in the asanas. This is the best program for anyone wanting to be a student in the Iyengar tradition of yoga. 

9. Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres 200-Hour Teacher Training

The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres focus on a very traditional approach to yoga teacher training, including fully vegetarian cuisine and devotional practices. This is one of the leading teacher training programs for those who are looking to immerse themselves in the Indian traditions that birthed yoga.

Another smaller studio that I had to include on this list is Inner Fire Yoga located in Madison. This studio’s yoga teacher training program is modular, meaning you can mix and match a Foundations module with another of your choice. 

Their specialty is Hot Yoga and is the only program that has a dedicated curriculum on this style of yoga. The studio is Woman-Owned and is one of the oldest studios in the Midwest. 

Factors To Consider When Choosing a Yoga Teacher Training Program

A lot of research went into narrowing down the hundreds of thousands of yoga teacher training programs to determine which 25 were a part of the best. There are so many incredible teachers and programs out there, so any not on this list are still likely to be wonderful. 

There were five criteria taken into account in choosing each of the 25 teacher training programs on this list: 

• Certified by Yoga Alliance or Other Professional Yoga Association — being certified by an outside association, such as Yoga Alliance, ensures that there are standards in place for those who are teaching, what is being taught, and a commitment to excellence. 

• Verified Reviews From Former Students — the best way to know if a program is a good one is if the reports of its alumni are primarily positive. All of these programs had overwhelmingly positive reviews from those that graduated from them. 

• Clear Expectations for Completion — all of the above training had very clear expectations for the students. A program that has clear guidelines and outlines what its students can expect from day to day is one that sets up its students for success. 

• Transparent Pricing —  it was important that the pricing for each and every program was clear and itemized, so students know what they are paying for their training and how their tuition is being used.
